Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a treatment that helps pets heal faster and feel better! By delivering high concentrations of oxygen in a pressurized environment, HBOT promotes recovery from injuries, inflammation, and various health conditions. At Natural Healing Pet Care, we're thrilled to offer this powerful therapy to help your pet get back to their happy, healthy self!
What to Expect During Your Appointment
-
The initial treatment requires a block of sessions to be effective. These sessions should be performed within a 1-2 week timeframe and can include two treatments in a single day (AM and PM) as indicated by the severity of the condition, or to facilitate logistics for the pet parent.
-
One exception is when treatment is performed to prepare a patient for surgery. It is then recommended within 24 hours prior to the surgery and post surgery, if possible. However, no sutures or metal staples are allowed in the chamber and thus post surgery may need to be delayed until those have been removed.
-
Please allow 1 hour per treatment.
-
Most dogs and cats do quite well in the chamber and after the first session will simply sit and look out the port window or lie down and rest.
FAQs
What is HBOT and how does it work?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment that involves breathing in 100% oxygen at a higher pressure than sea level. This environment allows efficient delivery of oxygen to all tissues in the body and allows oxygen to reach damaged or swollen tissues 3-4 times more effectively than under normal conditions. The nitric oxide cascade which occurs with HBOT increases the body’s production of stem cells by 8-fold and also enhances their mobilization. It plays a role in anti-inflammatory mechanisms, new blood vessel formation, collagen synthesis and healing.
What is it used to treat?
The conditions HBOT can treat can include, but are not limited to: neurologic disorders including IVDD (can be used pre and post surgery as well as a trial if surgery is not an option), stroke and idiopathic vestibular disease, musculoskeletal concerns including tendon and ligament injuries and arthritis, traumatic wounds and burns, pancreatitis and IBD, anti-aging tool, infections.
Does it really work?
At Natural Healing Pet Care, we have witnessed some remarkable benefits in our patients including but not limited to: paralyzed dogs walking again, wounds healing in half the time and without antibiotics, pain control due to severe arthritis, comments that their dog is “acting like a puppy again”, improved / resolved lameness from tendon injuries, resolved pancreatitis issues and more.
Is it safe?
HBOT is extremely safe with over 1000 chambers in operation across the United States and a very low overall incident. However, with a high oxygen environment, the risk of fire is elevated. Our team has had operational and safety training specific to our chamber and patients. Our facility has detailed procedures in place for safe HBOT operation under the education and guidance of the chamber manufacturer and the Veterinary Hyperbaric Association. We strictly follow these rules. Our chamber is made from stainless steel and it is animal specific. We typically treat one patient at a time.
